And He Will Be Called...

The prophet Isaiah spoke of Jesus many years before his birth saying…

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

As we come to Christmas 2011, these truths concerning Jesus proclaimed by Isaiah can give us great assurance as we seek to follow the Lord.  As I read these verses again, I jotted down a few thoughts concerning the names Jesus would be called.  This is not exhaustive but does give one something to meditate on as we enter the advent season.

1. Jesus is Wonderful because of …

-Who He is: Immanuel, God with us
-What He taught us
-What He did for us: forgiveness and eternal life
-What He can do for us now

2. He is a wonderful Counselor
-He is competent
-He is consistently present
-His counsel denounces the destruction in our lives and helps us envision the possibilities

3. He is the Mighty God-One we can know and experience personally

-Consistent in love and power-He can free us from sin and failure-He conquered…temptation, the world, the flesh, sin, and death.-By his power, we can overcome all he did
