And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. --Isaiah 9:6-7
In last week’s blog we focused on two of the names Christ was to be called from this passage, Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God. In this entry I want to remark on the last two descriptions of Christ as the Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.
The word everlasting speaks to His eternal nature. He was from the beginning of time and continues forever. John 1:1 reminds us of this fact that Christ was in the beginning and was God. One of his main purposes in coming to live among us was to give us eternal life. John 3:36 reminds us “that whoever believes in the Son has eternal life…”

The image of Christ as a father is one of protection, caring, and nurturing. It is sad that in our society today, the image of fathers has been marred because many men have abandoned their responsibilities as a father. However, in Christ we can find all that a true father should be . . . a nature of unconditional love, gentle discipline, and sacrifice for his children.
As the Prince of Peace, Christ speaks to our need for inner peace amid a troubled and suffering world. Jesus reminded us that the peace he gives is not like the world's. His peace is secure and cannot be taken from us in any circumstance. Through his forgiveness of our sins and the gift of eternal life, we can live in peace now and in the future. Psalms 29:11 says, "The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.”May you experience all the attributes of the names of Christ given in Isaiah 9:6-7 during this Christmas season and all year long. See you Sunday,Pastor Jeff
