Commitment

Tom Conner, international management and leadership speaker writes:
People by the millions are bailing out of jobs, careers, businesses, relationships and life in general. Many of these people lack commitment to a cause, lifestyle, purpose, or outcome. When it gets a little tough, uncomfortable, or they don't get the results they thought they would as quickly as they thought they should, their response is: "I'm outta here."

By commitment I am not suggesting you should endure an abusive relationship, continue to work for an organization that treats you unprofessionally or hold on to a business that has been dead and buried. I am suggesting, however, that you consider your attitude about this concept. Is bailing out your knee jerk reaction to difficult times, a failure, a stressful period in a relationship, continuous problems or a bad year?
Many people today seem to lack any sense of real commitment and responsibility. Everyone wants to blame someone or something for their problems or adversity.

Although he is not speaking concerning the Christian life, his words could apply.  Take note in a given month at worship attendance.  How many are truly committed to weekly worship?  A Harris Poll taken in 2009 estimated that in reality only 20% of those who called themselves Christians attended church in the last seven days.  The attitude of “What’s in it for me?” permeates the church.  As a result, if the church doesn’t do what I think it should, “I’m outta here.” The problem certainly lies in the church, not in me.  Too many people are looking for a feel-good religion with no responsibility, no sacrifice, and full blessings from God.  If it is the true church of God, that isn’t going to happen.

Paul reminds us in Romans 12:1-2 that we are to present our bodies as living sacrifices as an offering for God's great salvation given to us in Jesus Christ. Our minds are to be transformed from our mindset to God’s.  Therefore, our definitions of commitment are meaningless unless they are in line with God’s Word.

True commitment to God is all about Him, not about us.  Come see us Sunday.  We will be talking about that.
