I've grown to love caller ID on phones. They remove the mystery of who is trying to call me. I no longer have to use the phrase, "Who could that be?" I like that, especially when I don't want to talk to the countless solicitors calling at dinner time. Some callers try to sneak in with, "out of area" or "unknown" ID's. Sorry, if that shows up or a 1-800 number, I let the answering machine do the work. I figure if it is that important they will leave a message.
I know God is glad he doesn't have to use a caller ID phone or a phone at all. Just imagine if he did. Phone rings..."Oh know, it is God again!" Phone rings...it is God..."Honey, its for you." Phone rings..."Just tell him I'm not home." Phone rings...."That's the third time he's called today." Phone rings..."Just let the answering machine pick it up, if its important he will leave a message."
Throughout the Bible we find God is not limited to any form of communication when trying to reach someone. In Genesis we see him speaking directly with Abraham and in a dream to Jacob. In Exodus, he speaks out of a burning bush to Moses. In I Samuel, he called out quietly in the night to Samuel. He spoke to Daniel in visions. Paul was blinded on the Damascus road when God spoke. Even upon Jesus, God the Father communicated with the sign of a dove.
God is not mute in his desire to reach us. If we feel out of touch with God, it isn't because he hasn't tried to reach us. The question is, "are we answering the call?" If we are honest, our failure to hear from God is mostly due to a lack of desire to hear from him. Whatever our excuse, such as "I don't have the time," our lack of communication with God falls on us. I can hardly imagine us not taking a call or wanting to hear from those we love the dearest. We look forward to hearing from family and friends, especially those who live away from us. So, why is it so difficult for us to answer God's calls in our lives. No one loves or cares for us more. No one wants the very best for us more than our Heavenly Father.
Could it be we are missing the very communication we need to find the solution to a problem, heal a broken relationship, or find peace in our lives? We need to turn up the spiritual ringers in our lives and listen. I promise you God is trying to contact you. Will you answer?
Come see us Sunday. We will be talking about that.
