I was returning from a pastor's conference in Phoenix several years ago with a group of pastor friends. We had settled into our seats for the return flight back to Nashville. A family with three small children boarded. For whatever reason, one of the children was a few rows back from their parents who were sitting across the aisle from me with one of their children and the other child was next to me. As Dianne would say, "Being the Christian," I offered to change seats with the lone child a few rows back so the family could all be together. Little did I know what awaited a few rows back.
As I settled into my new seat hoping to relax and take a nap, I found myself beside two enthusiastic Jehovah's Witnesses. I am sure they were excited to have an "unbeliever" to share with for two hours. After the initial introductions, the spiritual dialogue began. I was stuck. I couldn't say, "have a nice day, I go to church," and shut the door. So I prayed, "Lord, help me share your truth in a loving manner and not get hostile or defensive." I admit I have a problem with untruth. For the next two hours my focus was on what it means to have a personal relationship with Christ. I hope they were challenged to explore deeper God's true Word, Jesus Christ. However, I fully realize how hard it is for those deeply entrenched in cults to break free. I imagine they felt a sense of accomplishment also for blessing me with the message of their Jehovah God.
We never know when God's spirit will call upon us to witness for his glory. As Christians we need only to obey. Jesus' final words to his disciples remind us that we are to go into all the world and preach the Good News of Christ to all creation. We shouldn't fear this command because He promises to be with us always, even unto the end of the world. As we walk in obedience to his word and go in his power and authority, God will bring us into contact with those who need to know about his great love and forgiveness for them.
Be on the lookout daily for those opportunities God brings to witness for Him.
Come see us Sunday. We will talk more about that....
