Tee Watkins, from our congregation, is a professional fisherman. He has all the right equipment to compete in fishing tournaments. He even has his own bass boat with glitter paint and lots of Ranger Boat shirts and jackets. When preparing for a fishing tournament, Tee is very careful to select the right fishing rod. (It is rumored he has over 50.) He also fixes the lures that will give him an edge where he will be fishing. Tee draws upon his knowledge of the particular lake pinpointing the right spots that might hold the type of fish he is seeking. As an avid fisherman, Tee understands the need for patience and perseverance in reeling in the prize catch.
Jesus drew upon his first disciples' understanding of fishing when he challenged them to a higher task--that of fishing for men's souls. Jesus knew they would understand that the Word of God, like bait, must be thrown out into men's lives to draw them to God. He knew they understood that finding the right spots to cast the Word of God out would be vital for its success. The qualities of good fishing apply to fishing for men because it takes great patience, perseverance, and courage to face the unknown.
Let us take a lesson from Tee and Jesus' disciples. We must be prepared to fish effectively. We must know where the fish are, what bait to use, and be patient. Jesus has called us to be "fishers of men."
Our task is to be equipped every day to place the Word of God into people's lives in anticipation that they will one day bite and find new life in Christ.
Some see us Sunday. We will talk about that.
