Would You Own a Company with Workers Like You?

As we focus this summer on how to live with conviction while swimming  in a world of compromise,  there is no greater area that we compromise our faith than in the modern workplace.  In an imperfect world there is no absolutely perfect job.  Most people are looking for the job that you do nothing and get paid greatly for it. Today's philosophy is, "I am going to do the least expected and try to get the most payment for it.  I want minimum effort for maximum return."

This type of thinking and work ethic should never be a part of the Christian life.  Jesus never taught it.  In Matthew 5:20, Jesus reminds us that our righteousness should exceed the Pharisees.  They were the ultimate clock-watchers, legalists and masters in doing what was required.  In Matthew 5:38-42, Jesus gives examples that tell us as his followers we are to go beyond the expected.  If our work requires we go the first mile, we should willing and with a good attitude to go another mile.  In other words, go beyond what is required.  Why?  It is these second-mile actions that cause those over us to realize we don't have to do this and ask why?

Our words about our faith are meaningless unless our work ethic backs it up.  Lets not brag about our dedication to God if our work lacks faithfulness.  What a witness it would be in the marketplace if we as believers would give maximum effort on the job.  If we would give our best and go beyond the expected, we could find our employers coming to church because our lives are different from the lazy and apathetic workers with the "I just want to get by" attitude.

Come see us Sunday.  We will give you some handles on going the second mile for Christ in your workplace.
