We see a lot of commercials advertising the treatment of depression these days. Cymbalta is probably the drug that is most advertised. View the commercial here. Anyone who has experienced clinical or bipolar depression knows the great difficulty in dealing with the symptoms of this illness. Listening to the majority of symptoms mentioned in the commercial reminds me of the symptoms of another type of depression--spiritual depression. In spiritual depression, we have a sense of uncertainty, questioning, aloneness and separation from God. There are similarities in our life responses in both types of depression.
In medical depression, help has been found in certain anti-depressant drugs. In spiritual depression, there is no such drug. We must rely on the truths found in God's word and continue to exercise our faith. In times when we feel rejected and let down by God, we must remember we are not the first to experience spiritual depression. The Bible is filled with examples of those battling times of spiritual depression such as Job, Elijah, Jonah, and David.
As we continue our summer series on "Standing with Conviction" we will explore how to overcome times of spiritual depression. We will explore where God is in these times and how we can help ourselves through these times. Would you say you are in somewhat of a spiritual low? Come see us Sunday. We will talk about that.
