"Men do not fail; they give up trying." Elihu Root
This quote reminded me of an old childhood story called "The Little Engine That Could" Read the story at this link. A little train carrying lots of toys for good boys and girls is faced with a seemingly impassable mountain to get over. Needing help the Little Engine cannot convince the Shiny New Engine and Big Strong Engine to help. Far too impressed with themselves all they can say is "I cannot. I cannot." This leaves the Little Engine to face insurmountable odds to pull the train over the mountain to the other side with only the help of another Little Engine.
Every child who has ever read this story will remember the response of the Little Engine to its task...."I think I can...I think I can." Then after conquering the mountain..."I thought I could...I thought I could..."
Failure was not an option for the Little Engine. It never gave up trying and accomplished its task. Many human beings could take a lesson from the Little Engine. Instead of worrying about failure, they should focus on continuing to try. Many people enter a walk with Christ and at the first sign of persecution, temptation, or failure are like the big engines in the story saying "I cannot" do this. Truth is, you cannot on your own. Only through the power of God's Spirit directing you and encouraging you added to your determination to walk with the Lord will you see success. Just as the Little Engine needed a little help, we need God's Spirit to help us conquer our insurmountable mountains.
Come see us Sunday. We will be talking about that.
