Living in a forested area as most of us do here in
Little Paint, we get used to the electric power going down any time a tree
falls across the power lines. My first
experience was our first winter here when the power was out for almost three
days. Admittedly, it was sort of cozy
romantic the first day, but living by candlelight got old quickly. Lucky for us, our gas logs helped keep us
warm. After a few more outages, I
decided it was time for a generator. I
was ready for the winter snow to fall.
However, I forgot about summer storms--a strong summer storm, the kind
that uproots trees. The first test of my
generator had finally come.
I must say it is nice to have lights on when no one
else around does. It is funny to watch
people drive past your home looking with bewilderment that you have power. I wonder if someone thought the preacher has
some special connection with God that I would have lights when no one else did.
I doubt it.
Our world runs on electrical power. We are so used to it being available at the
flick of a switch that when it is not on, we still flip switches out of
habit. A light bulb is the most useless
object when the power is not flowing to it.
When it isn’t being used for what it was designed for, what is it good
for?
This makes me think of the life of a Christian void
of the power of God’s Holy Spirit. What
use are they? For it is only by the
power of the Holy Spirit that we can live the Christian life. It is God’s Spirit that draws us to him in
salvation…convicts us of sin…leads us to forgiveness in Jesus…comes into our
lives as a seal of our relationship with God…guides us into all truth…teaches
us all things…gives us the power to overcome any trial and tribulation…and
effectively witness for the Lord.
Without the Holy Spirit’s power, we are ineffective in the kingdom of
God. We, like a light bulb, may have
potential, but without the power, we will never be what God designed us to be.
When God’s power comes in our lives, everyone around
us will be touched by His power emanating from our lives. Do you want that kind of power for your
life? Come see us Sunday. We will be talking about that.
