In his book a Culture of Death, Wesley Smith states that “a small but influential group of philosophers and health care policy makers" actively seek to persuade our culture that "killing is beneficent, suicide is rational, natural death is undignified, and caring properly and compassionately for people who are elderly, prematurely born, disabled, despairing, or dying is a burden that wastes the emotional and financial resources.
One medical professor was quoted back in 1993 saying: We can no longer base our ethics on the idea that human beings are a special form of creation made in the image of God, singled out from all other animals and alone possessing an immortal soul. Once this religious mumbo jumbo has been stripped away, we may continue to see normal members of our species as possessing greater capacities of rationality, self-consciousness, communication, etc. than members of other species, but we will not regard as sacred the life of each and every member of our species.
This kind of thinking has convinced many across the world to believe that abortion, euthanasia, genocide, infanticide and assisted suicide are valuable alternatives in our society. Even though in some cases these acts are protected by law, they are in violation of the highest law of God. How is a Christian to respond?
The sixth commandment reminds us that murder of legally innocent life is wrong in the eyes of God. As those created in "the image of God," we must remember all mankind is linked together by this image. Therefore, we should be protectors of human life and not destroyers of it. Just as Jesus was the defender of the weak, those with physical and mental handicaps and the social outcasts, so we too must stand for every man's right to life. This right is God given and not based on gender, race, ability, intelligence, or convenience.
Come see us Sunday as we explore the topic that Life is Sacred.
