Wise Givers

The Christmas story of the Wise Men traveling to find the Christ child has been told over and over again through song, printed word, pictures, and movies. Their actions provide the example for our Christmas gift giving.   Their effort to give is an example to all of us for these reasons:

  1. They gave it unexpectedly.  No one in that Jewish culture was expecting men from Persia to come bearing gifts for a baby.  The best gifts are the unexpected ones.  Gifts that come from someone who isn't looking for anything in return--they just give out of love for us.
  2. They gave with genuine joy.  "When they saw the star, they were overjoyed."  They couldn't wait to give the gifts they had traveled with many miles.   The true spirit of giving comes from the joy we receive in being the giver.
  3. Their gift was personally given.  They didn't ship it Fed Ex.  They really felt that they were on a mission to bring these gifts to the Christ child. From the moment they saw the star, they would not be detoured until they presented their gifts personally.  We can offer no greater gift than that of ourselves and our time to others.
  4. They gave a lasting gift.  Their story has been told for generations. Even most unbelievers know of the gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Most of the significant gifts in our lives are not material things but of lasting memories with our loved ones.
  5. They gave it as soon as they could.  They didn't hesitate to find the Christ child.  When they did, they offered their gifts.  What a challenge for us not to wait but go and give to those we love before it is too late.
As we prepare for this Christmas Sunday, may we begin to focus on some gifts we can give that will last forever.  Come see us Sunday.  We will be talking about that.

Pastor Jeff
