Joan of Arc was a peasant girl that claimed to hear heavenly voices urging her to save France during the Hundred Years' War. In early 1429, she led French troops in breaking the English siege of Orléans. She drove the English from the Loire towns and insured the crowning of Charles VII. In 1430 she was captured and handed over to the English. Condemned as a heretic, she was burned at the stake. She is quoted as saying, “Every man gives his life for what he believes and every woman gives her life for what she believes. Sometimes people believe little or nothing and yet, they give their lives to that little or nothing. One life is all we have; live it and it’s gone, but to live without belief is more terrible than dying, even more terrible than dying young.”
Joan didn't have to survive. She had a purpose beyond herself. Sad to say, many people live life with no purpose--they are just surviving. They miss the possibilities God has for their life and live with little commitment to anything. If we are going to discover our God-given potential, we must remove our survivor mind set and find a purpose in life worth giving our lives to. We must have a vision bigger than us that we are unable to acheive without the power of God. Only then can we understand that there are some things greater than just existing.
Come see us Sunday. We will talk about that.
