I would venture to say that the most familiar biblical story known by most people is that of David and Goliath. It seems even those not acquainted with the church understand the story of the seemingly weak overcoming the more powerful. The concept has been the basis for countless stories and movies. Yet, it is always referred to as a "David vs. Goliath" scenario. Just last week in the NCAA men's basketball championship, the Butler Bulldogs were said to be the "David" going against the basketball "Goliath" Duke.
At times life brings to us the David vs. Goliath scenarios. We (as Davids) are faced with seemingly giant situations (Goliaths). Goliaths can be anything that keeps us from progressing or overcoming in a variety of areas of our lives. Just as David took a stone and killed Goliath, we also need some God-directed stones if we are going to kill the giants hindering our lives. Our first step must be a desire that motivates us to tackle our (Goliath) problem. This desire must be so great that it can hold us steady until our giant is defeated.
If we are going to conquer our giants, it will cost us something. David fought the criticism of family and foes. Yet, he moved on the power of his convictions about God and his abilities. When we measure our possibilities, we should do so not by what we see totally in ourselves, but by what we see of God in us. With God, a smooth stone can down an armor-clad giant.
What giant are you facing today? If you are going to be all God wants you to be, you must conquer your giants. This Sunday we will be looking into that subject.
Come see us Sunday. We'll talk about things like that.
