Christmas 2010 is upon us. All of us are beginning the quest for the perfect gift for those special people in our lives. What a great sense of satisfaction we feel when they open our gift and say, "It's perfect!" On the other hand, we would be disappointed if they were to take the gift and never open it. Why would they do that? After all, we selected it especially for them. We chose the gift based on their personality, likes, interests, and ability to use it. Why would they put in on a shelf?
God must feel the same way when we don't use the spiritual gifts that he gives us as his children. I Corinthians 12 reminds us that in the "body of Christ," the church, God arranges the various gifts of the Spirit for the common good of the church body. Since everyone is gifted differently, we all need each other for the church to be successful. God arranges them as he wants for the purpose of mutual care for every member. Therefore, if one member isn't using his giftedness, the rest of the church suffers.
It has been said that 20% of the people in the church do 80% of the work. The example of a human body in 1 Corinthians 12 is used to illustrate how the church should function. Every part is vital to the survival of the body. If this statistic is correct, most of our churches need to be on life support. If only 20% of our physical body were functioning, we would be near death. No wonder God's church isn't growing more and developing more ministries to reach those in need of God's love. Many of its members are not using their gifts.
To be all God's has called us to be, we must discover, develop, and use our spiritual gifts. Beginning this Sunday we will start a two-week journey on Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts. I will be teaching and assisting every believer to discover their spiritual giftedness. I will also show us where our gifts can be used in the life of our church. You will not want to miss a Sunday morning, Sunday evening, or Wednesday night. I guarantee it will be life changing.
See you Sunday,
Pastor Jeff
