For many years now, church growth leaders have been focusing on the need for local churches to determine what their mission and purpose is. A survey of churches around the country will give you a variety of mission statements. These statements are an attempt to capture biblical directives with local ministry distinctives. Great time and effort has been spent in development of these statements. Whether these churches fulfill their stated mission and purpose can only be determined by time and observation. Someone once said, "If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time." At least these churches are aiming.
We are not hard pressed to find the mission and purpose of the church. Jesus makes it plain in Matthew 22: 36-40 that our purpose is to love God ultimately and love others genuinely. Then in Matthew 28:19-20, he lays out the mission to make more and better followers of Christ. Our mission and purpose are that simple. The problem is many congregations have focused on new or revamped ministries and methods hoping to build congregations. Without a clear understanding and commitment to our biblical purpose and mission, these programs are doomed to fail. The foundation of Jesus' commands in Matthew 28 and his declaration of our mission in Matthew 28 are essential.
Steve Green says it well in his song, "The Mission"....
To love the Lord our God is the heartbeat of our mission
The spring from which our service overflows,
Across the street ir around the world, the mission's still the same:
Proclaim and live the Truth in Jesus' name.
This week I will be challenging us to lay again the foundation of Jesus' command and commission as we explore God's vision for the Little Paint church in our community.
Sunday night I will be having a town meeting to share with you and get your input on where we have been this year and where I believe God is leading us.
See you Sunday,
Pastor White
