1 Peter 2:2 says, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk that you may grow up in your salvation." Peter reminds us that growth is expected in the lives of those who have been "born again" into faith in Christ. The sad fact is that many who have experienced the new birth in Christ have failed to grow in their spiritual walk. The Hebrew writer in chapter 5 lamented that he couldn't give them deeper teachings because they were still babies in their faith. His challenge was for them to grow past simple spiritual truths to much deeper understandings about God.
Just as physical development is necessary to live in our world effectively, spiritual growth is necessary if we are to live abundantly in life now and eternally in heaven. Why is it we take the time to eat right, watch our weight, and exercise? Isn't it so the physical man will be healthy, even for a temporary time? Why don't we give the same priority to feed every day on God's word, watch what we allow in our lives that would hinder our growing in godliness, and exercise our Christian life through prayer and worship. Oh, that we would have as much concern for the lack of spiritual growth in our lives as we do our physical man.
This Sunday we will be talking about the Church Foundation of Spiritual Growth. We will be answering the call to grow up in our faith and learn steps on how to make that happen. Milk is fine for babies, but not for grown ups.
Come see us Sunday we'll talk about things like that . . .
